Banking moves fast.
Customers need answers. Transactions need attention. Problems need to be solved. Policies and procedures need to be followed. Before you know it, another week is over.
But before moving on to next week, take a few minutes to ask yourself an important question:
What did I learn this week?
Welcome to Banker Check-In Friday, a weekly opportunity to reflect on your work, recognize your progress, and identify where you want to grow as a banking professional.
1. What Went Well This Week?
Start with what worked.
Think about the conversations, transactions, decisions, and challenges you handled this week.
Maybe you:
- Helped a customer understand something complicated.
- Caught an error before it became a bigger problem.
- Applied a procedure correctly in an unfamiliar situation.
- Asked the right question before completing a transaction.
- Helped a coworker.
- Learned a new banking process.
- Handled a difficult interaction professionally.
Professional growth isn’t always dramatic.
Sometimes it’s simply realizing that something that once felt difficult is becoming routine.
Recognize that progress.
2. What Did You Learn?
Every week in banking should teach you something.
It might be something about a procedure, product, system, regulation, customer interaction, or even your own approach to the job.
Ask yourself:
What do I understand today that I didn’t understand as well on Monday?
This week’s Teller Talk Thursday focused on an important training principle: don’t just memorize the steps of a banking procedure—understand why those steps matter.
Maybe something clicked for you this week.
You might better understand:
- Why a particular control exists.
- What risk a procedure is designed to reduce.
- Why certain documentation is required.
- When a situation should be escalated.
- Why accuracy matters at a particular point in a transaction.
- How one part of a banking process connects to another.
Those small pieces of knowledge accumulate.
Over time, they become experience.
3. What Challenged You?
Not every part of the week will go smoothly.
That’s useful information too.
Think about a situation that made you stop, ask a question, look something up, or seek assistance.
What made that situation challenging?
Maybe you didn’t know the procedure.
Maybe the situation fell outside what you normally encounter.
Maybe you understood the procedure but weren’t confident about applying it.
Maybe you needed clarification about your authority or when to escalate.
Instead of simply moving past the situation, use it to identify a training opportunity.
A challenge can show you exactly what you need to learn next.
4. Did You Ask When You Didn’t Know?
Banking professionals aren’t expected to have every answer memorized.
Knowing when to stop, verify information, review the appropriate procedure, or involve the right person is an important professional skill.
Ask yourself:
Was there a moment this week when I wasn’t sure what to do?
Then consider what you did next.
Did you guess?
Or did you use the appropriate resources available to you?
Building banking knowledge doesn’t mean eliminating questions.
It means getting better at recognizing which questions need to be asked.
5. What Will You Focus on Next Week?
Finish your Friday check-in by choosing one area for next week.
Not ten.
One.
It could be:
- Learning a procedure more thoroughly.
- Improving transaction accuracy.
- Strengthening product knowledge.
- Asking better customer questions.
- Reviewing a topic you don’t fully understand.
- Improving documentation.
- Becoming more comfortable with escalation procedures.
- Strengthening your communication with customers or coworkers.
Make it specific enough that you’ll recognize progress when you see it.
Your Banker Check-In
Before you finish the week, answer these four questions:
What went well?
What did I learn?
What challenged me?
What will I focus on next week?
You don’t need an hour-long training session to develop professionally.
Sometimes five minutes of intentional reflection can help you recognize what you’ve learned, identify a knowledge gap, and decide what deserves your attention next.
That’s the purpose of Banker Check-In Friday.
Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep building your banking knowledge.
